More than a third of young American kids think chicken nuggets are plant-based

A new study has found that 38% of children aged between 4 and 7-year-old from the United States believe that chicken nuggets come from plants.

A team of psychologists asked 176 children to categorize a range of foods, including cheese, French fries, bacon, popcorn, shrimp, almonds and egg.

Here are some interesting findings:

• 47% believed that French fries came from animals
• 44% incorrectly identified the origin of cheese
• 41% believed bacon is plant-based
• 40% believed hot dogs are plant-based
• 38% believed chicken nuggets are plant-based
• more than 30% misclassified popcorn and almonds as animal-based.

The study was published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology and shows that there are a lot of misconceptions around food at this early age.

The team used the findings to encourage parents to be more open about the source of foods:

"At the family level, youth climate activism may begin at the dinner table. By refraining from eating foods that violate their beliefs about the well-being of animals, children would also be acting in a manner consistent with their moral views of the environment. In addition to reducing their own carbon footprints, children's principled eating behaviors may also influence those of their parents."
